When The Salty Donut launched during Art Basel 2015, it swiftly gained a cult following, as locals lined up at the Wynwood truck for pillowy brioche donuts, from traditional glazed ones to a (quintessentially Miami) guava and cheese version, along with collaborations with the likes of Knaus Berry Farm (a cinnamon roll donut). Over a decade later, they now have five brick-and-mortar locations in Miami, with dozens more across Florida, the South, and the Mid-Atlantic.
Now simply The Salty, the donut shop has even made its foray into savory items — as of last month, they’re now serving a fast-casual-style breakfast and lunch menu. I popped in to sample some of the new offerings, from hot honey and ricotta toast made using the same 24-hour brioche as the donuts to a pistachio pesto Caesar salad topped with parmesan, cucumber, and delicious roasted chickpeas. Good (sweet, even?) news: The Salty is now a solid option for a quick bite.
I’ll definitely be back for the lunch bowl made with quinoa, spring mix, roasted sweet potatoes, avocado, and pickled red onions topped with maple dijon dressing and seasoned sous vide chicken. There are also a couple croissant sandwich options, including an egg and cheese and a medianoche with pork sourced from local fave Sanguich, plus a BLT with Neuske’s bacon on brioche toast. There’s also a grab-and-go counter with banana and date overnight oats, a mixed berry yogurt parfait, “Dubai chocolate” energy bites, and more. –Amber Love Bond
