At Turn Back the Clock Shop, 22-year-old Sebastian Rodriguez has built a shrine to the bygone days of ‘80s glamour. He opened the shop when he was just 18, using the money he earned from modeling. Inside, a relic-filled haven of oversized power suits, sequined ball gowns, and carefully selected consigned treasures from the Golden Girls of Miami await their next life.
Located on Bird Road in Coral Gables, the store feels part boutique, part museum — each piece a living exhibition, waiting for shoppers to discover the story of who wore it and where it came from. A Marilyn Monroe pop art sweater with a fur collar catches my eye: a late-90s Betsey Johnson original runway piece ($2000) that a Coral Gables woman wore every year to Art Basel, Rodriguez tells me. A magenta beaded mini dress ($200) reminiscent of Kelly Kapowski was another consignor’s 80s prom dress, and it came in with her prom night photo to prove it.
Next year, the shop celebrates its five-year anniversary, and in that time, Rodriguez has noticed Miamians’ growing love for vintage, mirrored in the popularity of markets like Magic City Flea and Little River Flea. Beyond clothes, accessories, records, and antiques (think $30-$150 for most finds, though the real gems can hit $3000), Rodriguez enlivens a complete 1980s renaissance with his Glamour Shots experience: hair, makeup, wardrobe styling, and private photo session. His makeup skills? Self-taught from a 1986 VHS tape, “Donna Mills: The Eyes Have It,” found at Goodwill. Rodriguez fondly romanticizes the decade of excess with a simple philosophy: if you had it, you showed it. And what could be more Miami than that? –Julia Cavalieri
