Pink paradise

The Backstory: When New Yorkers Andrew and Sarah Wetenhall bought The Colony in Palm Beach in 2016, they ushered in a new era for the historic “pink paradise.” Standing at the foot of Worth Avenue a block from the beach since 1947, the pink stucco dollhouse-like colonial facade remains much the same. Inside, though, previously bold, wild, color-saturated interiors were swapped out in favor of a more refined take on Palm Beach maximalism. Now, walls are covered in a riot of pastel, floral, and jungle prints with monkeys hiding in foliage, an ode to Johnnie Brown, the beloved spider monkey of Palm Beach pioneer Addison Mizner.

The Stay: 93 rooms — including multi-bedroom residential-like villas, bungalows, and penthouses available for long-term stays — are decorated in a variety of design schemes. Some are pale blue with white tassel detailing, others have geometric flower-like prints in pale lime green with floral headboards, while still others are baby pink with scalloped rattan headboards. Turndown service includes Ladurée macaron-like chocolates, a nice, perfectly on-brand touch.

I particularly enjoy the element of fantasy at the Colony with its implicit invitation to embrace the whimsy and don your wildest Lilly Pulitzer-inspired frock. For the luxury brand-loving set, the hotel is home to a Dolce & Gabbana boutique edited especially for The Colony, as well as a sundries shop selling Colony merchandise and other essentials. Meanwhile, the hotel staff is outfitted in flowy, floral Zimmermann dresses, classic Stan Smith Adidas, and custom Colony x Smathers & Branson belts.

The Key: Once a fixture of Manhattan’s Upper East Side, indoor-outdoor all-day restaurant Swifty’s wraps around the property’s kitschy Florida-shaped swimming pool. Hosting everything from a speaker series to poolside DJs and live music on weekends, it’s become a favorite of the Palm Beach social set once again. It’s an especially fun scene during Sunday bingo when a juicy burger and Champagne pairs perfectly with colorful daubers and the crowd doesn’t take itself too seriously.

Why It’s FOUND: The Colony’s contemporary updates invigorated the historic property with a more youthful, fashionable appeal, drawing a fresh crowd of locals and visitors as eclectic as the hotel itself. Bring on the Season. –Shayne Benowitz

A wellness community in Bay Harbor Islands

October is upon us. In short order, it will be Thanksgiving, and then the crush of the holidays, and into a new year of new challenges. In life’s busiest months, it becomes even more important to find a place where well-being fits seamlessly into the rhythm of daily life. THE WELL Bay Harbor Islands was designed to be just that.

Arriving in Miami by way of New York City, the membership club brings Eastern healing and Western medicine together under one roof — with the goal of making wellness part of your every day.

The 16,000-square-foot space features:

  • A robust fitness floor and movement studio

  • An East-meets-West treatment menu offering IV therapy, acupuncture, energy healing, facials, bodywork, massage, longevity medicine, functional medicine, and more

  • A beautifully designed social Bath House featuring Miami’s first Caldarium, along with a cold plunge, saunarium, infrared sound dome, and steam room.

Members also have access to cutting-edge longevity technology like Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy and Photodynamic Light Therapy, plus curated programming and opportunities to connect.

In its earliest stages, the membership community is invitation-only, growing through personal referrals and introductions. That means every new member is thoughtfully considered, creating a space where the people you meet are as engaged and committed as you are, and where connection feels effortless.

With founding membership now open, THE WELL is welcoming Miami into its carefully curated community built around one shared purpose: making wellness part of every day.

WORK • Thursday Routine

Art of chocolate

ISABEL GARCIA NEVETT • founder/chocolatier • Garcia Nevett Chocolatier de Miami
Neighborhood you work in: South Miami
Neighborhood you live in: Coral Gables

It’s Thursday morning. What’s the scene at your workplace?
Thursday mornings start at the chocolate factory, where the kitchen staff is making and packaging products for retail at the store and for corporate and wholesale customers. I supervise and take care of quality control (that means I snack on chocolates!), while keeping up with back office work. At around 11a, I leave for the store, taking with me freshly baked cakes and cookies, and any other products that the store needs.

What’s on the agenda for today?
It’s fall, so we’re hard at work on holiday products. We have a range of chocolate figurines for Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. This year we’re also working on new packaging, including a beautiful Chocolate Christmas Tree and Stars box.

Any restaurant plans today, tonight, this weekend?
This Friday, I’ll be going to Recoveco in South Miami. My sisters have both been there already and loved it. Lately, I’ve been eating out at Hereford Grill, a newly reopened Venezuelan-style steakhouse that’s very nostalgic for me and my family, reminding me of long lunches in Caracas. And for weekend nights, nothing like picking up a to-go pie at Miami Slice’s Key Biscayne location. Their bacon and leek pizza is to die for.

How about a little leisure or culture?
I love visiting Fairchild Tropical Gardens, a botanical masterpiece in South Miami. They throw a few big events throughout the year, including a big chocolate festival that we have been part of for the past dozen years. I love going to their Mango Festival in the summer and their Christmas lightshow.

Any weekend getaways?
Miami is perfect for weekend getaways with so many beach options. I have an 11-year-old girl, so we go to The Ritz-Carlton Naples, Tiburón, which has a pretty great pool area with a lazy river and fun slides, plus free shuttle access to the beach. There are some cool restaurants in Old Naples, including a Mediterranean one called Del Mar. We usually get ice cream from Gelato & Co afterwards.

What was your last great vacation?
We love traveling. Our last great vacation was to Normandy in the north of France. We stayed in a historic home on the beach for a week and rented a car to visit the different villages in the area, including places like the port town of Honfleur and the great cheese town of Pont-l’Évêque. There is a lot of interesting history there, from the Medieval tapestry in Bayeux to many World War II sights. It’s not as tourist-packed as other areas, so now’s the time to go.

Where are you donating your time or money?
We donate monthly to a low income school in Venezuela that we have personal ties to, as I used to volunteer there during my school years. The nun who started the school, Madre Maria Luisa Casar, was a wonderful human, full of vigor and enthusiasm. She built the school and adjacent medical center practically on her own.
